Q. What is the difference between "Crack" and Cocaine?
A. Cocaine is a local or topical anesthetic that stimulates the central nervous system. it can be "snorted" (inhaled through the nose), injected, or smoked by inhaling its vapors. Cocaine is sometimes called coke, toot, or nose candy. Crack is a very concentrated potent form of cocaine in its free-base form, and can only be smoked.  The effects of the drug begin with seconds after entering the system by smoking its vapors. A brief but intense euphoric feeling of well-being peaks within minutes, and is followed by a severe depression and a craving for more.  The individual is constantly trying unsuccessfully to achieve the same original "rush" by doing additional amounts continuously.

Q. What are the signs of Cocaine or "Crack" use?
A. List of possible signs:

Dilated pupils

Dry mouth and nose

Runny nose or nosebleeds

Frequent lip-licking

Excessive restless activity,

Lack of interest in food or sleep,

Irritable

Argumentative

Nervous

Overly talkative and changes subject rapidly

Chronic cold or sinus/nasal problems

Evidence of paraphernalia (glass vials, glass pipe, white crystalline powder, razor blades, syringes, needle marks.  Extreme sensitivity to loud noises, leading to paranoia)

Q. What are the health risks of using "Crack" or Cocaine?
A. Cocaine over-stimulates the circulatory, respiratory, and central nervous system. Cocaine interferes with the natural chemical in the brain that stimulates and regulates the firing of nerve cells.  It increases the Dopamine level, stimulating the pleasure center of the brain.  Muscle spasms in the various parts of the body can occur. Over-stimulation of the nervous system can cause convulsions which can lead to respiratory collapse and death. Long term crack (rock-like bits of cocaine that can be smoked) user have also suffered permanent damage to the cortex, the part of the brain that is used to think.  Lung disorders are possible from the smoking of crack.  Heart problems are common and infections occur more easily from injecting cocaine.  The additives that are common include talc, baby laxatives, baking soda, even poisons, have been known to cause severe health problems and even death.

Q. What are the standard drug detection times?
A. Please see our Drug Detection Times page for a complete listing. Remember
listed drug detection times depends on amount ingested, elapsed time since use, rate of metabolism, and amount of fluid intake. Because of these variables, times presented are only a general guideline. If you have a specific question, please call our confidential hotline at (800) 728-5360 to consult with one of our professionals.

Q. What is the difference between a hair follicle, a hair root, and a hair shaft?

A. The follicle is the tiny sack deep in the skin tissue from which the hair originates and grows. The root is the part of the hair just below the skin surface. The shaft is the exposed part of the hair above the skin surface.

Q. How are drugs detected in a hair follicle (Hair Test)?
A. A simple scientific fact: drugs, which are ingested, circulate in a person’s bloodstream which nourishes the developing hair follicle. Trace amounts of drug toxins become entrapped in the core of the hair shaft in amounts roughly proportional to those ingested. These traces remain in the hair as it grows out from the head at a rate of approximately one-half inch per month. A person's drug usage history can be obtained from the hair of any individual. Drug use can be detected from months, even years past, depending on the length of the sample. Standard tests currently provide at least a 90 day history of drug use.

Radioimmunoassay of Hair test is a proven drug testing procedure which not only detects if drugs of abuse have been used, but also provides information in the quantity of drugs consumed by an individual and the historic pattern of drug use. This type of information is not available from any other drug-screening procedure. The Radioimmunoassay hair testing process was pioneered in 1977 by Annette Baumgartner and Dr. Werner Baumgartner. Over ten years of research funded by the United States Navy, the Veteran's Administration, the American Society for Industrial Security and the National Institute of Justice on thousands of subjects has proven that drugs deposited in the hair can be measured by radioimmunoassay and ultra sensitive gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedures. There have been over 75 scientific publications worldwide, including reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Navy. 5 to 10 times as many drug abusers are accurately identified with the Radioimmunoassay hair test.

Q. Is there anything I can do or say if I fail a test?
A. Yes, Call 1-800-728-5360 immediately! Most tests companies use today are extremely flawed. If you fail a test, deny that you have used any illegal substance and insist that there must be something wrong with their test. Urine tests can be unreliable. Many people who have never done any drugs have tested positive for drugs because the tests are not accurate. Demand a second test. They should always give you one.
